Model BuilderÀs times we encounter situations where we need to perform the same routine work in ArcGIS using the same tools and following the same procedures, but with the use of different database.
In an attempt to further streamline these procedures in the software, we can create an automated model that performs these functions.
This tutorial is a Guest Post written by Vanessa Cecilia Benavides Silva, a native of Santiago / Veraguas Panama. Graduated in Geography and Environmental Analysis (2011) and specialization in Environmental Management and GIS (2012), both at the University Center of Belo Horizonte - UniBH. He is currently GIS Analyst and teaches GIS courses. It has experience in Environmental Analysis and GIS, development of general maps and database for various projects and monitoring of GIS in UniBH.
HOW TO USE THE ROLE MODEL BUILDER IN ARCGIS
ArcGIS features the Model Builder function that allows you to create models (simplified and manageable representation of reality) from flows that connect a sequence of necessarily present tools in ArcToolbox and database. The Model Builder allows both create work routine flows and create new tools.
In this example, we created a model to plot points gifts coordinates in an Excel table, exporting them directly as a final file.
One way to perform this procedure in ArcGIS without using a template, is entering the table with the points> Display XY Data and exporting the file to create it in the end, since when applying this function, the points are temporarily plotted . With Model Builder, we can create a tool for ArcToolbox that will allow for only one procedure, thus streamlining the process.
The first step is to create a toolbox (Toolbox) in ArcToolbox, for this:
Open ArcToolbox> clicking right on the white part> Add Toolbox> New Toolbox. Click Open and the Toolbox will be inserted:
Clicking right in Toolbox> New> Model and the Model window to create the template opens:
The Model Builder has several commands with different features. To know them and know how to use them better, it is recommended to read the explanatory tutorials site ESRI.

In Model window interface with ArcMap, locate and drag the ArcToolbox tools for Model (in this case, the tools Make XY Event Layer and Feature Class To Shapefile (multiple)).

Model Builder
You can create two types of models in Model Builder: closed and open. In general, in the closed, the user has already added and configures the stream input and output files, in the open, one can use the controls flow to different database, therefore, must be created parameters, which It requires user interaction to add and manipulate the database and tools.
The parameters allow the user to manipulate and incorporate input files and give the possibility to run the model through a dialog box (like all the ArcToolbox tools).
It is important to define the parameters of only the tool options that you want to appear in the dialog box. To do this, simply click right on the tool (Model window)> Make Variable> From Parameter and choose the following options:
Make XY Event Layer: X and Y Field, Spatial Reference, XY Table, Layer Name.
Feature Class To Shapefile: Output Folder.
You can rename the tools, click on the right and Rename thus facilitates the time the dialogue box opens.
Click the option Auto Layout Auto Layoutpara automatic organization of the flowchart, and Main Menu> Model> Save to save the template. Then, close the Model window and return to the ArcMap (click to enlarge).
In ArcMap, open the ArcToolbox, locate the Toolbox and created to double-click the Model and the window with the parameters set will be opened, simply fill in the information with the data to be applied:
In short, to create a model in ArcGIS Buider have the following:
